Habegar debates

Abegar (“አበጋር”) is an Ethiopian culture predominantly practiced among Oromo elders living in Wollo as a tool of conflict resolution. The platform brings forth contending socio-economic and political issues to the Ethiopian public for discussion and debate while also promoting human rights issues and peace building processes.

Accredited for his contribution in the introduction of the National Moot Court Competition in Ethiopia under the auspicious of Action Professionals’ Association for the People (APAP), Debebe Hailegebriel embarked on televising actual court proceedings and dissemination of legal information through a weekly TV program known as Chilot in the year 2011.

The court-room based television program is run in collaboration with Ethiopian Broadcast Agency (EBC) and recognized nationwide for its educational value.

Founded on these values, Habegar promotes the exercise of peaceful and progressive exchange of ideas to contribute to the development of the culture of tolerance and political debate. The program envisions participation of academicians, political leaders, and experts in the debate topics.

Habegar believes citizens’ ability to make informed decisions resides in access to information. The provision of public platforms such as Habegar Debates allows exchange of ideas, open discussions and debates on opposing views- while staying clear-off of conflict.

The program also objectifies youth participation for enhanced skills and technique in undertaking dialogues, communications, and negotiations towards institutionalization of the practice of debate within the context of the larger society in the long run.

To this end, Habegar is committed to ensure that the debate will address issues, not persons or religion nor ethnicity- with service to the people.
